  • W-2 Forms — From all employers
  • 1099-INT / 1099-DIV — Interest and dividend income from banks and investments
  • 1099-G — Unemployment compensation or state tax refunds
  • 1099-R — Retirement distributions (pension, IRA, 401k)
  • 1099-SSA — Social Security benefits statement
  • W-2G — Gambling winnings
  • Records of any other income (cash, barter, etc.)

Homeownership

  • Form 1098 — Mortgage interest statement
  • Property tax bills — Annual property tax paid
  • Closing documents — If you bought or sold a home this year
  • Home improvement records (for energy credits)

Education

  • Form 1098-T — Tuition payments from college/university
  • Form 1098-E — Student loan interest paid
  • Receipts for books, supplies, and required equipment
  • 529 plan distribution statements

Family & Dependents

  • Childcare expenses — Provider's name, address, and tax ID number
  • Adoption papers — If you adopted a child this year
  • Form 8332 — If claiming a child as non-custodial parent
  • Divorce decree or custody agreement (if applicable)

Deductions & Credits

  • Medical expenses — Out-of-pocket costs, insurance premiums, prescriptions
  • Charitable donations — Cash and non-cash contribution receipts
  • Form 1095-A — Health Insurance Marketplace statement
  • Retirement contributions (IRA, 401k statements)

  • 1099-NEC — Non-employee compensation from clients

  • Records of all business income received (invoices, bank statements)
  • Cash or unreported income records

Business Expenses

  • Vehicle mileage log — Business miles driven with dates and purposes
  • Home office measurements — Square footage of office vs. total home
  • Equipment purchases — Computers, tools, machinery receipts
  • Office supplies — Receipts for supplies, software, subscriptions
  • Professional services — Legal, accounting, consulting fees
  • Advertising & marketing — Website, ads, business cards
  • Travel expenses — Business trips (airfare, hotels, meals)
  • Insurance — Business liability, professional insurance

Estimated Tax Payments

  • Records of quarterly estimated tax payments made to IRS

Assets & Inventory

  • Asset purchases — Equipment, vehicles, property bought this year

  • Inventory records — Beginning and ending inventory values

Pro Tip: Bring Everything!

When in doubt, bring it. It's better to have a document you don't need than to need one you don't have. We can always set aside items that aren't relevant to your return.
